Today at the Oculus Connect developer conference there have been several exciting announcements. But a curve ball that took many by surprise, was the announcement – by Mark Zuckerberg no less – of a new Standalone Virtual Reality device. Mr Zuckerberg couldn’t provide much information other than the fact the device was still very much in the prototype stage. So data such as price and release date was not available.
Standalone means exactly that, it will not rely on either a PC like the Oculus Rift or an expensive mobile phone like the Gear VR or the new Google Daydream devices. The Oculus Standlone device will have a built in screen and all the technology to drive an untethered, portable virtual reality experience and we cannot wait to get our hands on one.
